Workshop on the ethical implications of the Electronics Industry

Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust is organizing a workshop on the Electronics Industry and its ethical implications. The workshop is to be held on Saturday, 15th May, in Dar l-Ewropa from 1pm-3pm.

Electronics Industry: Is it ethical? Do you own a mobile phone? Do you use a computer? Have you ever played electronic games? Have you bought or used a laptop? Have you ever wondered who assembles these products? Have you ever thought under which conditions they are produced? Have you ever asked who is the person behind such a product?

Whether X-Box, Blackberry, or simply computer: The electronics industry is happy to be modern and to have advanced equipment to facilitate your daily work and life. However,it is a completely different experience for the IT workers in producing countries such as Mexico or Thailand: exploitation, inhumane treatment and precarious employment relationships are high on the agenda.

Next Saturday, 15th May 2010, in Dar l-Ewropa, you have a chance to meet Rubenia and Merejilda, two Mexican women, who will be in Malta as part of the I SHOP FAIR project which is coordinated by Koperattiva Kummerċ Ġust.

Rubina and Merejilda will share their experience of what it means for them to work in the IT industry and how they are campaigning for human rights within such an industry with Centre for Reflection and Action on Labour Rights (CEREAL) in Mexico.

They willbe holding the ethical IT workshop from 1pm-3pm. Fair Trade refreshments will also be available during the workshop. Places are limited.
