Chamber of Engineers holds 14th edition of Engineering Excellence Awards

Enemalta plc, Professor Joseph Cilia and Ing. Paul L. Cardona were the winners of this year’s Malta Engineering Excellence Awards, the annual event held by the Chamber of Engineers. The awards were held under the Distinguished Patronage of the President of Malta, H.E Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, who was also present.

Industrial Excellence Award

The Industrial Excellence Award was presented to Enemalta Chairman Ing. Fredrick Azzopardi, for Enemalta’s project “The Malta-Italy Electricity Interconnector”.

Engineering Entrepreneur Award

Professor Joseph Cilia was awarded with the Engineering Entrepreneurship Award. Professor Joseph Cilia obtained his first degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta in 1989. He pursued his studies with a Masters and a Doctorate at the University of Nottingham. His doctoral work was presented in international conferences and was awarded the Derek Kirk Prize for the "Best Research Award" and two patents were also submitted on the innovation emerging from his work.

In 1998 Professor Cilia returned as a full time lecturer at the University of Malta and a part time consultant for local industries and authorities where he could use his expertise in electrical drives and industrial power and control applications.

In 2003 he was appointed as Research Director of Abertax Group and in 2010 the Chairman of Abertax executive board. Through his research input, together with a team of professional engineers the company managed to obtain 12 patents some of which have been turned into high quality products.

Extraordinary General Meeting 2015

During the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Friday 27th February 2015, it was decided that an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) should be held in order to address a couple of pertinent issues which could not be addressed during the meeting in February. The first issue relates to the decision taken by council regarding the introduction of the role of a permanent international secretary. According to the AGM minutes, this had to be discussed in detail at council level and reported during this EGM. The second issue was the introduction of a legal advisor in accordance to the latest revised statute. The council had to find a legal advisor which would then be approved by members during this EGM.

An EGM is therefore being called for 26th November 2015. The meeting shall be held at the Professional Centre, Gzira at 1800hrs. Please note that only paid up members are entitled to vote. Membership fees will be accepted before the meeting commences.

Malta Engineering Excellence Awards 2015

The Chamber of Engineers has opened the call for nominations in the following categories:

The Maurice Debono Lifetime Achievement Award
The Chamber of Engineers, in memory of one of its founders, Ing. Maurice Debono, offers, on an annual basis, the Maurice Debono Lifetime Achievement Award. This is awarded to individuals who have been committed throughout his/her career to the advancement of Engineering and the profession in Malta.

Industrial Excellence Award
This award is directed towards organizations or companies who have demonstrated excellence in their engineering work. This can be done through the accomplishment of challenging projects, introduction or use of recognized standards, research and development and engineering of new products.

Engineering Entrepreneur Award
This award is targeted towards engineering professionals who have who have taken up entrepreneurship in technical/scientific fields in the past 10 years. The reasons behind such an award are the following:

a. To promote start-up companies owned by engineers
b. To promote the idea of entrepreneurship amongst engineers

The awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday 8 December 2015 at 7pm at the Verdala Palace.  This event will be held under the distinguished patronage of H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta.

The nomination period is now closed. The process to evaluate nominations will commence on 20th November.
