Energy recovery from waste: Where waste is no longer wasted

First of all, there is a clear distinction between energy recovery systems for uncontrolled dumps (such as the former dump at Maghtab) and for engineered landfills, as is the case for the Ta’ Zwejra and Ghallis facilities.

Both the dump at Maghtab and the Ta’ Zwejra engineered landfills are located within the Maghtab Waste Management Complex, and both are no longer operational. However, this is basically where the similarities end. The differences in land filling patterns have resulted in emissions with very different characteristics.

Legal action 'likely' after Safi crane accident
Crane - photo by www.timesofmalta.comThe Occupational Health and Safety Authority was likely to take legal action against people involved in the crane accident in Safi on Monday, CEO Mark Gauci said.

Preliminary investigations suggest there was negligence, he said, adding, however, it was still early to specify who the action would involve. It could be the developer, the contractor, the project coordinator and supervisor, the crane owner or its operator.

Call for Balance in Theory, Practice
If university aspired to excel in engineering, science and technology, it had to invest considerably in research and innovation programmes, according to Ian Buhagiar, an engineering student.

The lack of practical instruction in university courses was strengthening the idea that university was simply churning out academics, he said during yesterday's graduation ceremony at the university's Sir Temi Zammit Hall.

Professional indemnity insurance offers protection for claims for compensation made against professionals for negligence, errors or emissions that have been made in the conduct of their business.

CERN Engineer Wins Outstanding Young Person Award

Outstanding Young Person of the Year Ing Nicholas SammutElectrical engineer Nicholas Sammut, who works at the European Organisation of Nuclear Research (CERN), won the fifth edition of The Outstanding Young Person of the Year award on Tuesday.The award, presented by Junior Chamber International Malta, recognises individuals under the age of 40 who excel in their chosen field.

“We are recognising these young people, we are recognising their achievements, but we are also making sure that others get to know about what is being done by these people so that they realise that they can achieve more in life – for themselves, as well as others,” JCI Malta national president 2008 Chris Mallia said.
